Rowan Co. Pre-K Test Scores Soar 325%
Kids think ApSeed is play. Educators call it a “game-changer.”
ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Local nonprofit ApSeed is a major force behind skyrocketing Kindergarten readiness scores in Rowan-Salisbury Schools. Data shows results have soared from 17% to 73% in recent years, according to district data from the DIAL-4 readiness screener.
ApSeed provides pre-K educational touchpads, a family engagement guide, and weekly coaching texts at no cost to families thanks to public and private donors. The touchpads are purpose-built for preschoolers – no Wi-Fi, camera, or internet access – so children learn foundational skills without distractions.
“ApSeed is a game changer for preschoolers,” said Dr. Kelly Withers, superintendent of Rowan-Salisbury Schools. “We see a dramatic improvement when our students have been using ApSeed at home.”
ApSeed has partnered with the school district and community organizations since 2016. In 2020 ApSeed scaled its work, saturating the community to reach as many families as possible — especially those without access to high quality Pre-K programs or Wi-Fi.
“ApSeed changes the trajectory for an entire generation of children,” said Derek DiStefano, 2021–2022 RSS Principal of the Year and principal of Morgan Elementary. “Too many children start behind and stay behind. ApSeed also gives those who need extra support a chance to catch up,”
ApSeed has distributed more than 8,000 pre-K touchpad kits to Rowan County preschoolers through partnerships with schools, childcare centers, and public programs.
“The best part is that we’re not talking about a one-time success,” said ApSeed founder Greg Alcorn. “ApSeed is a proven, repeatable solution that can change futures in communities across America. With donor funding, families pay nothing — but the impact can last a lifetime,” said ApSeed founder Greg Alcorn.
“This data shows extraordinary gains in kindergarten readiness following ApSeed’s investment,” said ApSeed Executive Director Julie Morrow. “This is what happens when a community invests early and intentionally in children.”
